This is an excerpt from the book “Military Leadership Notes from Experience Chapter I: Exemplary Leaders of The Indonesian Armed Forces” by Prabowo Subianto, focusing on the story of Yos Sudarso.

Yos Sudarso had a childhood dream of becoming a soldier, despite his parents’ preference for him to become a teacher. He pursued this dream and attended the Naval Academy in Semarang, where he excelled as one of the best students. He served in the Japanese Navy during the Greater East Asia War.

After Indonesian independence, Yos Sudarso joined the People’s Security Agency in the marine sector, which later became part of the Indonesian Navy. Throughout his career, he participated in various military operations, commanding several Indonesian Navy Ships. In 1961, he played a crucial role in the TRIKORA operation to liberate West Papua from Dutch control.

During the mission in the Aru Sea, Yos Sudarso and his crew faced Dutch warships and engaged in a battle. Despite the odds against them, Yos Sudarso made a brave decision to sacrifice his own ship, KRI Macan Tutul, to protect the other two ships under his command. Tragically, Yos Sudarso and 24 men lost their lives in the line of duty.

Yos Sudarso’s selfless act of sacrifice and courage in the face of adversity exemplifies his dedication to serving his country. He will always be remembered as a hero who gave his life for the sake of Indonesia.
