Ferrari’s decision not to pit under VSC at F1 Australian GP

Ferrari Formula 1 team principal Fred Vasseur recently explained the decision-making process behind Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton’s racing strategies during the Australian Grand Prix. Leclerc managed to secure the lead at Albert Park after starting from the fourth position on the grid. However, when a virtual safety car was deployed due to Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull breaking down, neither Leclerc nor Hamilton decided to pit, unlike the Mercedes team. This strategic move allowed Hamilton to express concern over the team radio, suggesting that at least one of them should have considered pitting. Despite another VSC intervention later in the race and Leclerc eventually making a regular pitstop on lap 25, Mercedes ultimately capitalized on their advantage, securing a 1-2 finish.
Vasseur acknowledged that Mercedes had superior pace throughout the race, being consistently faster by three to four tenths even after pitting. Despite Leclerc and Hamilton finishing in third and fourth place, 16 seconds behind the race winner George Russell, Vasseur remained positive about Ferrari’s strategy and performance. Looking ahead, Vasseur emphasized focusing on the next race in China, stressing no regrets regarding the strategy or pace displayed in Australia. This highlights the team’s determination to learn from the race and make necessary adjustments to improve their performance in future events.
