Alex Palou’s hopes of securing victory at the Good Ranchers 250 at Phoenix Raceway were shattered when he crashed out early in the race. The reigning and four-time IndyCar Series champion was involved in a collision with Rinus VeeKay’s #76 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet, leading to his vehicle being wrecked after just 22 laps on the 1-mile tri-oval.
Starting from the 10th position on the grid, Palou’s #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda quickly climbed into the top three shortly after the race began. He settled in behind the Team Penske pair of pole-sitter David Malukas and Josef Newgarden.
A restart on Lap 19 following a brief caution saw Graham Rahal’s #15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda passing Palou moments later. A maneuver attempted by VeeKay from the high line to overtake Palou from the outside resulted in contact between the two drivers. This caused Palou’s right-front to hit the outside wall, forcing him to retire due to the significant damage.
Palou commented after the incident, expressing uncertainty about the cause of the collision and stating that he was unaware of anyone approaching. VeeKay managed to continue racing but was left frustrated, believing he was squeezed into the contact by Palou. He also suspected potential suspension issues, running five laps down in 23rd place at the time.
The clash between Palou and VeeKay marked a premature end to what could have been a promising race for both drivers. While Palou’s race was ruined by the crash, VeeKay faced challenges due to the aftermath of the collision, impacting his performance on the track.
