Jakarta — President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended the 79th anniversary celebration of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) at Monas, Jakarta, on Saturday (October 5), accompanied by several officials, including Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto.
Jokowi emphasized the strong bond between the TNI and the public, as demonstrated by the large turnout of citizens at the event. This unity is seen as one of Indonesia’s greatest strengths.
“This 79th anniversary of the TNI shows how close the TNI is to the people, and that is a major power, a great strength of our country—the unity of the TNI and the people,” Jokowi stated after leading the TNI anniversary ceremony.
While acknowledging the challenges that still need to be addressed, Jokowi recognized the ongoing improvements within the TNI.
“There is still much to evaluate and improve, but I see very good progress,” he added.
The public event drew residents from across Jabodetabek, who flocked to Monas early in the morning. The crowd marveled at the grand parade featuring 100,000 personnel and over 1,000 defense vehicles (alutsista).
The excitement of the crowd was palpable, especially when they spotted President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who was also in attendance. Many rushed to greet him, eager to shake hands and capture the moment with the incoming president after he had finished attending the TNI’s annual celebration. (RR)
