Why Commissioners with an Auditor Background like Agus Joko Pramono are Important in the KPK

Strong Leadership: Bringing Auditors to the KPK for Corruption Eradication

The efforts to eradicate corruption in Indonesia require leaders who not only have legal knowledge but also expertise in financial audit. In this regard, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) needs to strengthen its ranks with leaders from an auditing background to ensure that state finances are managed with high accountability.

In the selection of KPK’s future leaders, three names have emerged as worthy contenders: Agus Joko Pramono, I Nyoman Wara, and Michael Rolandi Cesnanta Brata. All three bring experience and expertise in the field of audit that will make a significant contribution to the fight against corruption in Indonesia in the future.

These three candidates have solid educational backgrounds in finance, all graduates of the State College of Accountancy (STAN). Agus Joko Pramono, who served as a member of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) from 2013-2019 and as the Vice Chairman of BPK from 2019-2023, is known for his extensive experience in overseeing state finances.

I Nyoman Wara, currently serving as the Chief Auditor at BPK, has a long track record in ensuring transparency in public finances. Meanwhile, Michael Rolandi has built his career focusing on financial oversight in local governments, making him a valuable asset in strengthening financial governance at the local level.

With experience and expertise in the field of audit, these three candidates are expected to bring a new perspective in combating corruption and maintaining the integrity of state finances.

International-Level Leadership: Agus Joko Pramono’s Global Experience as an Important Asset for the KPK

The three candidates for KPK leadership with auditing backgrounds, namely Agus Joko Pramono, I Nyoman Wara, and Michael Rolandi Cesnanta Brata, all have strong national-level experience. However, Agus Joko Pramono brings an additional advantage with an impressive track record on the international stage. He has served as the Vice Chair of the United Nations Independent Audit Advisory Committee (UN-IAAC) and as a member of the Intosai Development Initiative (IDI) Board.

The UN-IAAC, a body under the UN General Assembly, provides recommendations and advice to the UN Secretary-General on auditing and accountability. On the other hand, IDI, an international institution under the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (Intosai), focuses on enhancing audit capacity in developing countries and is based in Norway. Intosai itself is a global organization that includes financial audit institutions from around the world and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

The presence of KPK commissioners with auditing backgrounds is increasingly important to strengthen financial oversight and accountability in the fight against corruption. Agus Joko Pramono’s international experience provides the KPK with a highly relevant global perspective in handling large-scale corruption cases.

In the history of the KPK, the role of experienced auditors in leadership has proven effective. One example is Alexander Marwata, who served as a KPK commissioner from 2015 to 2024, after previously working as an auditor at the Supreme Audit Agency (BPKP). Such experiences underscore the importance of in-depth understanding of financial audit in combating corruption at the national and international levels.
