This article reports on Pope Francis’ visit to Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium in Jakarta, where he used Indonesia’s national vehicle, the Maung MV3, designed by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and produced by PT Pindad. The Pope was welcomed by President Joko Widodo and used a specially modified Maung to greet the 87,000 attendees present for a grand Mass at GBK.
The modified Maung had several features to accommodate the Pope’s needs, including an ergonomically designed rotating seat covered in a red carpet. As the Maung made its way to the stadium, the attendees chanted “Viva il Papa” to welcome Pope Francis in a traditional Catholic manner.
During the event, Pope Francis blessed and greeted the faithful from the Maung vehicle. The CEO of PT Pindad, Abraham Mose, explained the modifications made to the Maung MV3 for the Pope’s visit, including a foldable staircase, main seat in the rear, sunroof, and other features.
The engine specifications of the Maung MV3 remained unchanged, with a 2,200 cc turbo diesel engine capable of reaching speeds of 100 km/h and producing 199 horsepower.
