TB Hasanuddin: Surveillance is Important to Uncover Criminal Activities
bukamata.id – Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Major General TNI (Ret.) TB Hasanuddin, spoke about his experiences and views on intelligence from the past to the present.
This was conveyed by TB Hasanuddin during a seminar titled ‘Additional Rules in Espionage: Networking or Power, a Discourse’ at the Indonesia Christian University, on Tuesday (June 11, 2024).
The event was the result of collaboration between the Center for Security and Foreign Affairs at the Indonesia Christian University (CESFAS UKI) and the Department of International Relations at the University of Indonesia (UI).
On that occasion, TB Hasanuddin emphasized the importance of technology in intelligence activities, as well as the challenges faced in surveillance.
“In the past, intelligence operations were carried out with limited resources and inadequate technology, so the situation was often referred to as silent and dangerous,” said TB Hasanuddin.
As revealed in Amnesty International’s surveillance tool report, cybercriminals utilize advanced technology to steal sensitive data. Therefore, it is important to implement strong security measures, such as using complex passwords, activating two-factor authentication, and regularly updating software.
To keep up with the times and technological advancements, TB Hasanuddin said that Law No. 17 of 2017 was drafted and enacted to regulate intelligence practices.
However, he also emphasized the importance of surveillance being carried out only in the interest of the state as the top priority and adhering to basic intelligence principles, namely unclaimed success and unknown failure.
In principle, TB Hasanuddin also stressed the importance of the moral and ethical conduct of officials in carrying out surveillance practices to prevent abuse.
It should be noted that this seminar aims to discuss spyware issues and emphasize the importance of regulations that can accommodate national security and civil rights in a balanced manner.
With the presence of various experts and practitioners in this field, this seminar is expected to make a real contribution to the formulation of better policies in the future.
